This music is dedicated to people who help, whether they be teachers, health professionals, safety personnel or therapists. They can bring light when we seem to face darkness. These dedicated individuals help us navigate and keep us safe in a complex world.

Life Endures, As the River Flows is a work for String Orchestra composed during the COVID 19 pandemic of 2020. These are the thoughts that guided this creation. Today Man is faced with a great challenge, survival in the face of a global pandemic. COVID 19, a novel virus, has gripped the world with unprecedented force affecting millions medically, financially, and emotionally. As this work is completed, schools and churches are closed, businesses are closed, and people are experiencing quarantine or shelter in place until solutions toward recovery can be found. Underlying the trauma and tragedy is a sense of optimism that the pandemic will pass. It may just be the human spirit that bolsters the optimism, the antithesis to the crisis, but as we look to nature, we see the ebb and flow of cycles. Seasons change, weather patterns change, living things die and new growth appears. Perhaps that is what gives us hope. This music shifts many times to represent the uncertainty of the future, imitating the unpredictability of nature. Life Endures, begins with a foreboding opening theme followed by a development of ideas that shift between E minor and G major keys, homophonic and polyphonic textures and sustained vs. moving notes. Students will enjoy playing syncopated, upbeat rhythms, as well as expressive, emotive phrases. This piece may be performed alone, or as a trilogy with Nature Restores and Water Glistens, other works in my catalog that were composed during the pandemic.
Nature Restores, As The River Flows is a work for String Orchestra composed during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. The rapid pizzicato throughout imitates the bustle of birds, plants, and animals I observed as the spring season unfolded in full glory during shelter in place. In the opening, the first violin plays the sound of a bird chirping, while the lower strings toggle a mysterious accompaniment, representing the anxiety felt as I walked the trails near my home. The brisk tempo echoes the activity of nature I witnessed, and signifies the urgency of change. The syncopated rhythms in parallel fourths emphasize the contrast between uncertainty and hope. This work should be performed with spirit and expression. This piece may be performed alone, or as a trilogy with Life Endures and Water Glistens, other works in my catalog that were composed during the pandemic.

Water Glistens moves in compound time, imitating the gentle flow of water in streams along trails I walked near my home. I walked often during the pandemic shut down, allowing nature to provide solace during an anxious, uncertain time. The calm conclusion includes the call of a bird played by the first violin, indicating all will be well. Man will beat the virus, triumph, and hopefully, make the world a better place. Students will enjoy learning the contrast and similarity of triplet rhythms in compound and simple meters. This piece may be performed alone or as part of a trilogy, including Life Endures and Nature Restores, other works found in my catalog, composed during the pandemic
